Course & Elevation
The TCS Sydney Marathon is Australia's biggest marathon and the newest of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors, with 32,963 finishers from 117 countries in 2025. The 2026 race is on Sunday 30 August, starting in North Sydney and finishing 42.195km later on the Sydney Opera House forecourt. Entry is in hot demand: places were allocated by ballot (closed October 2025), with charity and official travel packages the remaining ways in.
The course is built around Sydney's showpieces — runners cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the opening kilometres, then wind through the city, its parks and harbourside streets before the finish under the Opera House sails. It is a World Athletics Platinum Label course and a net-downhill one (−83m), but not an easy one: 313 metres of climbing is folded into constant undulation, so rhythm is repeatedly broken and quads take a beating on the descents. The course cut-off is a generous 7 hours.
Undulating city marathons reward specific preparation over raw mileage. A structured, event-specific block develops the strength to absorb repeated short climbs at marathon effort, the eccentric conditioning to run downhills without trashing your legs before 35km, and a pacing and fuelling plan tuned to a course that never quite settles into a flat rhythm. That's the difference between surviving Sydney and racing it.
