I was going to the gym.
I wasn’t training.
Three years of consistent 6am classes and Parvin’s body hadn’t changed. Some stretches she was putting weight on while training five days a week. Ten weeks into a proper programme, the change she’d wanted for years finally showed up. In her own words.
Three years of showing up, and nothing changed.
I wanted to make a change to my gym routine. I came to a realisation that my body wasn’t changing at all, after going to the gym consistently for three years, after a long break having my two kids. At stages I was putting on weight while I was going to the gym five days a week. So I wanted a change.
I’d go at 6am to get it done and out of my way. I mostly did group classes, no matter what they were. The frustration is that you have to work around their time and their programme. Get there a few minutes late and you can’t join. If Tuesdays were boxing days and for any reason your body didn’t want to do it, I had no other option. I had to do it, because it was my only group option.
Those classes didn’t follow how my body felt. I was following them, I wasn’t listening to my body.
A free session, and no assumptions.
What stood out was the level of attention Nathan puts in for every individual, on technique and on completing an exercise properly. He offered me a free session just to find out where I was standing, so he could give me a plan. He didn’t jump to a conclusion about my body or my strength level. He took everything step by step.
I like detailed responses to all my questions, and that it’s never a yes or no answer. If there’s a question that needs a longer chat, he allocates time for it.
To be honest I hadn’t had any other coaches in Australia, but I see a lot of them just spending time chatting with their clients about random topics. Nathan would not let you finish your sentence if your rest time is over.
Rest is part of the training.
He taught me a big and important lesson: listen to my body. And knowing that proper rest is as important as the training itself was another big achievement for me, where I’d always pushed myself and got nothing back but feeling tired.
Eight to ten weeks, and the change finally showed.
I have burnt fat and gained muscle. I have absolutely achieved the visual change I wanted for years, and this is only after 8 to 10 weeks.
My training programme actually motivated me to review my eating habits, and I’ve made good, easy changes to my daily eating that resulted in losing 2kg. I’m sure those two things happening at the same time resulted in a very noticeable toning in my body that myself and others can tell.
My clothes are fitting loose around my waistline, my bottom and my legs. I haven’t seen myself look like this in my clothes for years. That’s very satisfying, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the rest of my training journey.
I feel a lot stronger. I can tell when I go for long walks or short runs. My legs used to be tired after a short while on my feet. Now I feel a lot stronger physically and mentally. Knowing that the time I spend training is not wasted, and that I’m going in the right direction, affects my self confidence.
Very happy with the decision.
I am very happy with my decision to make a change in my training routine. Three years of turning up at 6am and hoping, against ten weeks of actually training to a plan. There’s no comparison.
